N.M. Lottery Scholarship still coming up short

For years, the New Mexico Lottery has said the scholarship program was projected to run short of money. The newest report reflects that could be the case as soon as the 2014-15 school year.

Officials for the Legislative Lottery scholar ship say that if current trends hold true, the demand on the scholarship will mean a $10.5 million difference for fiscal 2014 between the need for the scholarship and the funds available.

Larry Behrens, a spokesman for the New Mexico Higher Education Department, explains why the scholarship has yet to see a solution to the problem. “By law, the Legislature is the only body that can pass requirements for a permanent solution to the scholarship.

The Senior Art Show 'Rising Star' will be held in Rio Rancho tonight

The Rio Rancho Public Schools Senior Art Show 'Rising Stars' will be held Friday, April 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the Rio Rancho City Hall.

The reception and award ceremony will have refreshments for those who attend. The public is invited to the free event and welcomed to view the Artworks from Rio Rancho and Cleveland High Schools, along with the Cyber Academy. Mayor Tom Swisstack will present awards to the students who are featured in the exhibit at 6 p.m.

The Senior Art Show 'Rising Stars' is currently going on on the third and fourth floors at the Rio Rancho City Hall located at 3200 Civic Center Circle.

Amazing teachers rewarded

Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond their job description? Now is the time for them to get some recognition.

The Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico has announced that is accepting applications for the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is for teachers who teach high school grades nine through 12.

Nominated teachers will receive a cash stipend, $4,000 for professional development and a computer, donated by Intel Corporation. They will also become a part of the Golden Apple Academy of Fellows. The Academy is a professional community of outstanding teachers from around New Mexico.

Nominated teachers will complete a comprehensive application describing their teaching methodology, professional development experience, community volunteerism and other aspects of their teaching philosophy.

APS board welcome two new members

APS board welcome two new members

As the Albuquerque Public Board of Education re-elects two familiar faces, it will also welcome two new members that will be sworn in Wednesday, March 6 at 5 p.m.

New member Don Duran will represent District 6 that includes the Northeast Heights, and Steven Michael Quezada who will represent the newly created District 5 on Albuquerque’s West Side will be sworn-in. Returning board members Lorenzo Garcia of District 3 and Dr. David Peercy, who represents District 7 will also attend the meeting.

All four board members will serve four-year terms.

The meeting will take place at the APS building, located at 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE.

Whether it's fruits or frutas, colors or colores, the Volcano Vista High National Spanish Honor society students are spending time with first graders at Tierra Antigua Elementary, the hook...conversations are taking place in Spanish.


February is National Discover Languages Month, and once a week high school juniors and seniors make their way down to the elementary school.

“This is a chance to apply what we’ve learned,” junior Aubriana Knell said

Students must have a 3.0 GPA to join the Spanish Honor Society, as well as a minimum 3.5 GPA overall in Spanish classes.

Dash and fun-run to benefit local superheros

Kiss The Toad Creations and Sunset View Elementary School will host the Superhero Dash and Fun Run Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2-3 p.m

The mission is to encourage and recognize children who are battling life-threatening illnesses. All proceeds will help benefit a Superhero Celebration held for children at the local Ronald McDonald House.

Limited pre-race registration is at 1 p.m. All participants will receive a goodie bag. Admission is $10 per person.

Program deadline approaching for next-year juniors

 

Students who will be juniors during the 2013-2014 school year have until Friday, Feb. 15, to apply for the college prep International Baccalaureate (IB) program that will be held at Sandia High School.


All qualifying students in Albuquerque are encouraged to apply for the two-year program.The application is due by Feb. 15 in the IB Office at Sandia High School.
