Summer Wings soars tomorrow

The Rio Grande Nature Center reminds people to join them at the 18th Annual Summer Wings Festival. The celebration starts tomorrow at 8am, with various tours and information sessions about butterflies, hummingbirds, dragonflies, and other insects throughout the day.  

Summer Wings is an annual tradition and it’s a great opportunity to see and learn about all the amazing creatures in and around the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park,” said Park Superintendent Beth Dillingham.

Summer Wings is free with regular Park admission.

Bring your pajamas, a love of sea creatures, and an open mind because the ABQ BioPark is offering the chance for kids of all ages to spend the night in the Albuquerque Aquarium!  The sleepover begins on Friday, August 19, 2011 at 7:00pm and ends on Saturday morning, August 20, 2011 at 8:00am.

Kids will get the chance to learn about how animals of the ocean behave after dark as well as visiting the touchpool, playing games, making crafts, and seeing a movie at the Aquarium Theatre.

Bring your kids to explore the wild

The Open Space Visitor Center is hosting a wilderness training session for 6-12 year old kids to give them a sense of confidence in the wild and expose them to a variety of insects, plants, and animals.  The sessions will begin at 10:00am to 3:00pm on Friday, August 5, 2011 and Saturday, August 6, 2011.

Guided moonlight tour at the botanic garden

The ABQ Botanic Garden is offering the chance for people of all ages to come and explore the beauty of nature in the moonlight on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.  This event will take you and your family on a guided tour through the garden on the lookout for nocturnal animals, night-blooming plants, and pollinators that thrive in the darkness.

To attend, you must pre-register and there is limited space available.  To register call 505-848-7180.  Tickets cost $10 for adults and $6 for youth.

Take a walk along the bosque

The Open Space Visitors Center is offering nature enthusiasts a chance to take a guided walk with Elsa Bumstead who is a triple threat biologist, naturalist, and birder.  She will take participants along the riverside forest for a 1.5-hour beginners-level walk.  Make sure you bring your binoculars and weather appropriate clothing!  Plus, as an added bonus there will be hot coffee and snacks afterwards.

Space for this event is limited to 20 people for anyone ages 7 and above.  To pre-register and receive trailhead directions call 505-897-8831.

Come and bring your kids to explore the fascinating world of sharks for Shark Discovery Day this Saturday, July 30, 2011 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the ABQ BioPark Aquarium.

This exciting day of sharks, sharks, and more sharks will offer ancient shark legends, hands-on experience with small sharks in the Sharks and Ray Encounter, and more!  This day will also feature discovery stations to introduce attendees to the five species that live in the ABQ BioPark.

ABQ BioPark searching for volunteers

The ABQ BioPark is looking for volunteers to serve as docent, BioVan Ranger, greeter, and horticulture or touch pool assistant.  If any of these interest you, then visit the new volunteer orientation on Thursday, August 4, 2011 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at the Zoo’s Nature Theatre.

Interim Education Curator, Tallie Segal explains, “Volunteering is a great opportunity to get involved in the BioPark community and teach about the incredible resources we have.”
